I want to share with you a story that might make you laugh, sure did make me cry, or it just might inspire you to give it your all and become the person you have always wanted to be. Many of you know me as the lady on TV who uses coupons to save money and to help other people, but what you may not know is that I am a self-made, business woman as well. When my daughter was young I knew that I wanted to be successful in business, but I also wanted to have the opportunity to stay home with her and raise her. Knowing what I wanted, I set out to start a small business, and after a lot of hard work and persistence I had a thriving tax business.
Faatima vs Quicken Loans
Many years have passed since then and my work ethic has never changed. I see what I want and I go after it. One of the targets I set for myself was to lose weight. Bam started losing the weight, lost 130lbs in fact less than 2 years. It’s one of those things where you just know it is time to make a change. I set a goal to lose 190 pounds. To this day I have lost 130 of those pounds and continue to annihilate the last 60! Besides losing weight I wanted to become healthier in general. Again I began to research, network, and figure things out as I have always done. I learned about nutrition and began to eat healthier; I investigated fitness and began working out; I sought after a new lifestyle that would help me achieve my goal. As of today I can say I have done things I use to only dream of, like hiking a volcano in Hawaii and running a marathon! Guest blogger for Huffington Post, O Magazine, CNN, USA Today, OK, US magazine, Commercials. ETC. So as you can see failure is not an option for me. Plus I figured since I was successful with all those things, I surely was good enough for Quicken Loans.
While I have attained my professional goals in these last 13 years, I have others I wish to pursue. One of the things I have always wanted to do was to work for Quicken Loans. I chose not to go after the position in the past only because I wanted to be at home to raise my daughter. Time has passed and my daughter is now grown and out of the house. It is a new chapter of my life, so to speak. I have looked at myself and what I have done and look to the future to see what more I can do. You see, you never stand still and never stop changing. So I figured the time has come for me to go after that job that I wanted at Quicken Loans. I began the process by going online and applying for their open positions in May. I didn’t hear back from them, which was very disappointing, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. Being the determined person that I am I applied to Aerotek, a temp service for Quicken Loans. A recruiter called me in for a interview just a few days after applying online. I thought the interview went well, she even requested for me to send over my references via email after the person to person interview, but after checking my references she asked me when did my last show aire, and I told her 2012. She then replied nothing was available at the time. I promise you I was baffled, couldn’t understand why she wanted to know about my last appearance on the show. Then she said if something became available she would keep me in mind.
Here is where most people might give up, but if there is one thing that I would like to teach people, it is that persistence and loyalty to your dreams are important. I didn’t give up. It didn’t even cross my mind. I began to tweet about Quicken daily, hoping to get some attention. Shoot, I even tweeted the owner of Quicken (Dan Gilbert). After a few days of my tweeting campaign. I got a call from a Quicken Loans recruiter named Sean. I was shocked and excited, but deep down I was nervous. Not getting a job is a lot like getting dumped. It is rejection at its core, and who isn’t deeply embarrassed when they are rejected. (Especially when people ask you how the interview went).
So we went through a brief phone interview, but then he told me they would have to run my credit report. I knew my credit wasn’t perfect, but didn’t realize that it would affect me in a job position. I found out that many companies are now asking to check your credit report. A few days pass and here we go with the second phone call from Quicken Loans. In any case my credit was my demise… (womp, womp, womp) I was told that I could reapply when I got my credit issues resolved. (I only had 6 blemishes, but nevertheless) It was so embarrassing. I felt defeated. To be honest with you, I wanted to cry. So I asked myself (Faatima) “What do I do now? I then said to myself, (“You’re not giving up!”) So I sent Sean an email thanking him for his time, and asked him if he could he give me some tips that might help me the next time I applied. Needless to say Sean never replied to my email. But then guess what! I received a email from another recruiter named Lauren, from Rock Connections, the sister company to Quicken Loans I made it through the first phone interview and then through to the second phone interview a few days later with a recruiter I guess higher in rank named Kelly. I was waiting for confirmation about the third and final interview when I received a phone call saying they decided not to move forward with me. I asked Kelly could I asked her a question. ( Shoot, I figured I had nothing else to lose, they already rejected me three times).
She stated that they chose someone with more experience. When Kelly called me I was drinking a fresh cup of coffee. Once we hung up I just cried. I felt like a complete failure. Cried until I drank my last sip of coffee, then I decided to tell you guys my story, Although it’s embarrassing maybe it will help someone going through the same process.
One thing I can appreciate is the recruiters do take the time to call to tell you YES or No. That way you’re not waiting around wondering.
You may be wondering why I am so specific to the Quicken Loans Company. I mean there are a million other jobs out there. I definitely am loyal to my decision to become a Quickens employee. They are just the best of the best. Right now they employ about 8,000 people in my great city of Detroit and have really made Downtown Detroit a happening place. Fortune has named them in their “100 Best Companies to Work for.” They were also named #1 in Computerworld’s best places to work in IT. They are in the heart of the City; to me they are the heartbeat! Other advantages are a highly competitive wage, medical, dental, vision, a matching 401k, flex spending account, and a referral program that puts money in your pocket. In addition the employees enjoy 11 paid holidays, and discounts to so many businesses, related and non-related to the company, and paid time off to volunteer. They definitely have a work hard culture, but it is countered with a play hard culture as well. I really want to be a part of the team, I mean who wouldn’t?
So what does all this mean? Well, there are a few things I hope that you leave here with. First and foremost, I hope that you will always follow your dreams, to infinity and beyond, because no one can make them happen but you. Next I hope that you will realize that failure is a part of life. Don’t let it get you down. Stand back up a million times if you have to, but never ever stop believing in yourself and your dreams. Finally, make sure your life is in order. You never know what it is that will knock you down. I am definitely going to make sure to take care of my business and never let it override my dreams again. I’m in the process right now to make good on everything I can and get my credit cleared, and when I do….yup, you guessed it, I am going to apply to Quicken Loans again, and this time I am going to get it! (fingers crossed)
So in the meantime, until a great company comes and snatches me up, I’ll be here with you guys helping you save one dollar at a time!
If you guys have any advice on what I can do better next time to help me gain employment, Please Share!
P.S. After the interview always do a follow up email thanking the recruiter for their time. Yes, it is their job to look for new employees, but they could’ve bypassed your resume. You never know how that email could change things!
